Club team ends season
The men’s soccer team’s season came to an end this weekend as they lost to Salt Lake Community College in the semi-finals of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association regional tournament in St. George.
SLCC scored in the first 10 minutes of the match and USU could never recover.
“It’s hard,” USU team captain Landon Potter said of the loss. “You don’t get into your game when you have to dig yourself out of a hole so early.”
The Aggies began the tournament on a good note defeating Dixie State 2-1.
Angel Cicerio scored for USU and it was unclear who scored the second. A cross was played into the penalty area. As the ball bounced through traffic, it ended up in the net and was enough to give Utah State the win.
The victory didn’t come with out a price, since a couple Aggies could not play in the next game against UVSC due to injury. Herschel Hugie received a knock to the knee after getting cleated and Clint Sadtterthwaite injured his ankle. The Aggies struggled as they lost 6-0 to the Wolverines. Potter admitted that very little went right for the Aggies.
“It was one of those kinds of games where everything went crappy,” Potter said. “They had nine shots and scored six.”
Two of the UVSC goals were scored off of miss-hit crosses that ended up inside the post.
Even with the loss, Utah State advanced to the semi-finals where SLCC eliminated the Aggies.
Losing to SLCC put an end to a rollercoaster season for the Aggies.
Potter explained that the biggest issue this year was getting people committed and consistently showing up to games and practices.
