Companies seek employees among USU engineers
Representatives from 12 companies spent Tuesday evening with engineering students during the fifth annual Evening With Industry, a part of Engineering Week. The event was put on by the Society of Women Engineers.
More than 100 students attended, and this was the first year the event sold out, said Olivia Leonhardt, vice president of Corporate Affairs for SWE and a mechanical engineering junior. Leonhardt said the goal of the event is to help engineering students network.
“These networking events are always a great way for us to casually get to know students, their dreams and aspirations,” said Toni Mund, one of the representatives from ATK.
Mund said ATK looks to fill internships and full-time positions at events like Evening With Industry, and they love USU students.
“We know the caliber of students we get from USU,” she said.
Vicki Call, also from ATK, was hired where she had interned. She said it’s important to remember there’s more to getting a job than networking.
“Some of it has to do with who you know. The rest of it depends on doing a good job while you’re there,” she said. “They’ll remember you.”
Lori Caldwell, a sophomore in biological engineering, has already experienced the benefits of networking.
“I just got a job because my friend Ashlyn knew people,” she said.
This is Caldwell’s second year attending Evening With Industry.
“It’s awesome that you get to meet with companies on a personal level,” she said.
The event started with a meet-and-greet, where the companies set up tables and students mingled with the representatives. Students sat with the companies they had signed up to eat with at dinner. The dean spoke and the evening ended with a raffle.
