Student gov’t looking to fill vacant seat
ASUSU is looking to fill the hole created last month when Jason Pickup, former vice president of graduate studies, left Logan to attend dental school.
Pickup was offered a vacant seat in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ dental school. In order for him to take the seat, UNLV required that he began the program immediately. Pickup resigned from his student government position and left his family in Logan for Las Vegas to begin classes on Sept. 6.
Pickup’s duties are currently being conducted by Spencer Watts, president of the Academic Senate.
ASUSU President Quinn Millet will nominate Pickup’s replacement through interviews. His nomination must then be approved by the ASUSU Executive Council. Applicants are required to be matriculated graduate students in good standing with both the graduate studies program and their particular department. Applications for the position were due Monday, Oct. 10.
“[It’s] a lot of work for the student body; it exposes you to a lot of things you wouldn’t see otherwise,” Millet said of the position. “We want someone with a good attitude.”
The graduate vice president position is a voting position on the ASUSU Executive Council, which means that Pickup voted on legislative matters that affected campus as a whole, such as student fee dispersement.
The position also heads the Graduate Student Senate, which makes academic decisions for all graduate students. The position has power to appoint members to various student committees, such as the Computer Fee Task Force Committee or the Student Fee Board.
