OUR VIEW: New game day shirts were unnecessary
The game day T-shirt was a great idea when it first came to be. Suddenly the Spectrum was alive with blue and all it took to create school unity was a $5 purchase in the ticket office or bookstore.
The current game day shirts are not so old. They were unveiled mid-way through basketball season just two years ago. Freshmen were given the shirts at Connections at the beginning of the fall and the shirts have been available at other retailers in the valley for the rest of the community to get in on.
So why the change?
There was no public outcry for students demanding a new design, no obvious dissatisfaction with the shirts.
Even with all the explanations that have been offered, it°Ãs still unclear to us what exactly was wrong with the old shirts and why new ones are going to be better for student spirit and unity. The change simply seems to be occurring for the sake of change.
We are concerned that the change is too soon for the shirts. That a new design less than two years after the unveiling of the first one will be detrimental to the shirts two main purposes in the first place: school unity and tradition.
It will be interesting to see how students respond in the next few weeks. We sincerely hope the new shirts only add to the sea of Aggie blue in the Spectrum and that school pride continues to increase. Ã 6¶5ASUSU Athletics VP Rosie Strong did say it doesn°Ãt matter which of the two shirts students wear, the point is to show support for the teams.
But if students still want to °?show °Ãem their °ÃA°Ã game°± instead of °?meeting the challenge,°± we can°Ãt say we blame them.
