Arts and Lectures schedule announced for Fall semester

Bonnie McDonald

The Utah State University Arts and Lectures Department is ready to kick off the semester with a series of convocations. This semester the convocations will be held Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. in the TSC Ballroom, with the exception of the Homecoming Week speaker in October. The speakers are as follows: Herman Boone

Herman Boone, recently depicted in Remember the Titans by Disney, will be the first speaker on Sept. 27. He soothed racial tensions in his Alexandria, Va., community in 1971 by first calming them on his integrated football team at T.C. Williams High School. As head coach, Boone worked with Bill Yoast to help the team win by reaching for common goals of mutual respect. Although Boone is now retired, he continues to inspire and motivate with his speeches. Cynthia Cooper

Cynthia Cooper will be the convocations speaker on Oct. 17. This Houston Comets team member is “universally considered the best female basketball player in the world,” said Sara Diem, ASUSU Arts and Lectures vice president. She has received the Olympic bronze and gold medals and has been involved with numerous community projects. She is also a national spokesperson for children’s literacy. Raised by a single mother in Watts, Calif., she learned to strive to be the best she could be from her mother and will share her experiences. Tom Dorsey

Tom Dorsey, speaker for Nov. 8, is the president and co-founder of Dorsey, Wright & Associates, an investment firm that gives advice to individuls, corporations, banks, pension or profit sharing plans, charitable organizations and numerous broker-dealers world-wide, Diem said. He has written many books and is a regular guest on radio and television programs. Dorsey is the recipient of multiple business and speaking awards.
