LETTER: Kid arguement lacked logic

Editor,

In response to the letter titled “Your kids may ruin the world,” I ask the Statesman why they printed such a biased and poorly developed argument. My stance is not about being anti-gay, it’s about being anti-illogical. At least previous letters on the topic had a point that made one think.

For example, where did the writer come off with 12 children per heterosexual family? Last I checked, the average was about two; three at the most. As to the point of the ecosystem being unable to sustain us all, check the facts. As of Jan. 26, there were 292,458,954 people in the United States. Texas, the most hospitable of our larger states, consists of 267,000 square miles. As one square mile equals 640 acres, there are 17,880,000 acres in Texas. Assuming a family of three (I’m being generous), the number of families in the United States is 97,486,318. This would provide 1.75 acres or one acre per family with 73,393,682 acres of land left over for industry and government. The remainder of America is still available for farming. In no way is America overcrowded by 12 children who all drive SUVs.

Secondly, heterosexuals are not the only ones who drive SUVs and I’m sure homosexuals are not the only people yelling, “Save the rainforest.” Sure, Logan’s air was bad, but go to Los Angeles, New York, or even Detroit, where I’m from, where the air is regularly bad, not just due to a short-term inversion.

Finally, singles (even gays) can adopt. Just look at Rosie O’Donnell. If homosexuals are so perfect that they’ll save all the unwanted orphans, why don’t they do it now? In reality, there are good and bad homosexuals, just as there are good and bad heterosexuals. I’m surprised that anyone who is open-minded enough to support gay marriage would be so close-minded with biases about evil heterosexuals and angelic homosexuals. Hopefully, the Statesman will not print biased, but rather logical arguments in the future.
