LETTER: Let’s keep Morrill at USU

Editor,

It is sad to learn that Rick Majerus’ legendary career as coach for the University of Utah will soon be over. He is an icon in the college basketball world and brought a credibility to the program as one of the winningest teams in the country over the past decade. Upon reading the news, as alumni of Utah State University, we became worried that Stew Morrill’s success would make him a top candidate for the job. Our suspicion has since been verified by the media that this is the case. The University of Utah would benefit, and Morrill could benefit from inheriting such a program.

Morrill has done an amazing job as head coach of the Aggies and has brought consistency to the program. It is difficult to recruit top players to Logan, yet he has recruited some of the top JC transfers in the country. Not to mention, in recent years he has managed to bring in some of the top recruits in the state. He has failed to win 20 games only once. Currently, Utah State is off to its best start and perhaps its best season yet.

What is our point? We like Stew. And we think we can speak for most, if not all of USU alumni, by saying that we all like Stew and we want him to stay. If he goes to Utah, there is no doubt that he will be successful. But Utah is already a successful program and has been for some time. If he stays in Logan, he will be known as the man who turned a good program into a great program and the team to be reckoned with in the state of Utah. Stew, please stay in Logan.
