Parking permits required for students

Parking passes, required for enrolled students to park on Utah State University property, are being sold for the 2001-2002 academic year at the new parking office.

The new parking office is located North of the softball diamond at 840 E. 1250 North.

“We will start ticketing on Monday,” said Lisa Leishman, director of Parking and Transportation Services. “You can buy passes at our office.”

When buying a parking permit, students will need a completed application, student I.D., vehicle registration and the appropriate fee according to USU’s parking Web page.

“It’s $10 for economy and $35 for a student B parking pass,” Leishman said. “With a B parking pass you can park east of the terrace and other designated places on campus. With the economy pass you can park at the stadium and take the Aggie Shuttle.”

The Aggie Shuttle has four routes that run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is also one evening route that runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, Leishman said. Maps of Aggie Shuttle routes are available on any Aggie Shuttle, at the new parking office or in the visitor information center.

“I have to leave 30 minutes before class so I can park, and I wait for the bus for another 20 minutes and I’m still late to class.” said Lindsey Blau, a sophomore public relations major.

“We definitely do sell more passes than there are spaces due to students being on campus at different times during the day,” Leishman said. “As I drove around today I wondered if students realized there are more parking lots available. There is always space, it just might be farther away. Students with B parking passes can park in economy.”

Previously available parking areas located within Logan neighborhoods have recently been declared off limits, according to the USU Web page. Signs will be posted to designate the new restricted areas.

The parking office now offers a new carpooling program to staff and faculty of USU according to the Parking and Transportation August newsletter. The USU Parking and Transportation definition of a carpool is “consisting of two or more people riding together at least four days a week.”

The newsletter reports the cost of the new pass as $72 divided by the number of persons riding together and an additional $5 fee per person. Spots available are the most accessible and convenient in staff parking areas, according to the report.

“Students can ride the Logan Transit District, take the Aggie Shuttle, bike and walk,” Leishman said. “We highly recommend that students take advantage of those options. If students live three to five blocks from campus, we recommend they walk.”

For more information students can contact the parking staff Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 797-3414. Students can also visit the Parking Web page at www.usu.edu/parking.
