Engineering students can get involved

Hello Aggies. Thank you for taking a few moments to read my update on your friends in the College of Engineering. Although it is difficult to be an engineering student and not live in a state of constant excitement and elation, here are a few reasons why I am excited about the coming year.

We have a tremendous amount of students within the college that are anxious to get involved. In fact, that is the biggest challenge facing the Engineering Council right now. To accommodate these students, we restructured the council and adopted a structure similar to that already used in some of the larger colleges on campus. While I am excited to work with all those who have applied to be on the council, I realize there are probably more of you who would like to get involved. I would encourage those that didn’t get a chance to submit an Engineering Council application to contact me at jcaleb@hotmail.com or 797-7445.

With the new structure in place, we are in a position where we can accomplish many more programming activities within the college. Get excited engineers. There will be an increased number of social opportunities this year. Despite popular opinion, engineers are people too, and many of these activities will be coordinated with other colleges since we don’t have as many opportunities to interact with other students here on campus.

One particular event on this year’s agenda is an academic conference/seminar to be held during Engineering Week at the end of January. Another project in the works is magnifying an existing program designed to provide local sponsors to fund design projects within the college.

And finally, administration has announced that the awarding of the construction contract for the new engineering buildings is in its final stages. Construction for the first building will begin as soon as early spring. Administration is also implementing, for the first time, a five-year master’s in the engineering program. Students already in the program will have the opportunity to participate beginning this year.

So yes, I am excited for the coming year. There is so much we want to accomplish and we have the people to make it happen.
