LETTER: You should rule your life
Editor,
This is in response to a letter that was in The Statesman Nov. 19. It took me awhile to figure out if the writer was a liberal or a conservative because she spoke of abortion as murder. I couldn’t agree more with that interesting selection of words she used. I agree with her that government should have no authority over your decision to have a child. That is a decision that should be between husband and wife (despite the ridiculous ruling of the Massachusetts court to allow homosexuals the right to marry).
However, the choice is made when you have sex, not after you get pregnant. I don’t know what has gotten in the minds of society thinking that we are not responsible for any of our actions. No wonder our society is falling apart – or is that just my conservative perspective? We all have freedom to choose our actions but we don’t always have the right to choose our consequences. Otherwise, the Unabomber‚ and the Washington, D.C. Sniper‚ would choose to be free. I’m glad the Republicans understand this principle when it comes to abortion. She also said “an unborn child does not have more rights than its mother.” That may be true but they do have the same God-given right to come into this world as you and I did.
The next issue she wanted to bash was religion in schools. Religion should not be taught in schools according to the Constitution, but religion and God are two separate things. God is what this country was founded upon, whether you believe in God or not. The forefathers came here because of God, the Constitution was written with God in mind, even our monetary system was established with God in mind. You can take religion out of schools but you can’t take God out of this country. I just want the writer and others like her to realize where their blessings come from and why this country is so great: God. Whether you like it or not.
