OUR VIEW: Winter means time to take more time

The leaves are mostly gone, temperatures are dropping and a skiff of snow can be seen on the hills. It can only mean one thing – time for a reminder about winter driving.

It is obvious that there are many students at Utah State University who are not native to Utah and may have never driven in snow. But, this warning goes out to everyone, including those people who feel slippery driving is second nature.

It seems like everyone has been talking about the major lack of precipitation over the past year and the need for a good winter. Prepare now, because it could be on its way. We can only pray.

As mentioned in the Nov. 10 Statesman, adjustments need to be made so everyone will arrive where they plan safely. Take some time to get the car checked and winterized. It may cost a little, but the investment will be worth it. Throw an extra blanket and snow scraper in the trunk, in case of emergency, and make sure the tires are ready for the winter ahead.

But most importantly, take more time. Wake up a few minutes earlier to get the car warmed up and the ice scraped off the windows. Drive slowly – you never can tell when the next patch of ice will be under your tires. Plan ahead so there won’t be a reason to be in a rush and cause an unforeseen collision. It isn’t worth it. We hope everyone will be safe this winter and the much-needed snow can be enjoyed.
