OUR VIEW: Decision makes phoning easier
To stay or to go?
In coming months, consumers will be getting that option in more than just fast food joints.
The Federal Communications Commission recently ruled that customers of local phone companies can take their numbers as well as their business with them when they switch to a mobile phone provider, starting Nov. 24. This decision mirrors the earlier ruling that allows cell phone customers to take their mobile number with them when they switch providers, also to take effect on that date.
There are a few limitations:
– Only in the 100 largest metropolitan areas do local phone companies have to be ready to switch home numbers to a cell phone. The rest of the country has until May 24.
– Consumers can only take their landline or wireless number with them if they stay in the same area.
The decision will allow consumers to seek the best service at the best price without the obstacles that may have prevented them from switching previously. They can stop worrying that they will lose contact with friends, family, clients or business associates when their number changes. They won’t have to go through the hassle of contacting everyone to let them know of the change, or having new business cards printed.
The FCC decision has an effect government rulings rarely have. It makes phone users lives simpler. It fosters greater competition between phone providers, hopefully leading to price reductions and more options in the marketplace. All of these things are good for consumers.
