LETTER: Govt. should not rule lives
Editor,
I just wanted to thank Mr. Lloyd for making the Democratic Party sound so appealing in comparison to the Republican Party: “The freedom of choice over one’s body to murder an unborn child, the freedom of choice of religion in schools which has resulted in absolutely no religion in schools, and the choice of sexual preference.” All those choices sound pretty good to me. See, I have this silly belief that the government should have no authority over my decision to have a child or not, my religion, or my sexual preference. I believe forcing someone to have a child they don’t want is a form of rape by the government. An unborn child does not have more rights than its mother.
It is the Republicans in Utah who are trying to pass laws that would outlaw abortions, even in cases of rape. As one Republican said: “If we make exceptions then all women who want abortions will say they have been raped.” Religion should be kept out of public schools; it’s called separation of church and state, a principle this country was founded on.
Let’s say religion was allowed in schools, what religion would it be? See, that’s the problem; there are too many religions to accommodate everyone. If parents want their children to have religion at school they have the right to send them to a private institution. As for sexual preference, Republicans passed laws back in the day outlawing interracial marriages. We look back now and condemn that, so what will we think 50 years from now about how we treated homosexual couples?
