Ski swap to kick off, Thursday

The Beaver Mountain Ski Patrol will be holding its annual ski swap at the Stan Laub Training Center Thursday through Saturday.

Every year, hundreds of people participate in the ski swap, either by buying skis, snowboards or other accessories, or by selling their own.

Bart Liechty, a senior majoring in public relations and a member of the Beaver Mountain Ski Patrol, said that at the ski swap, “everybody benefits.” The ski swap has been an annual occurrence for close to 20 years, and has been run by the ski patrol every year.

“All of the money goes to the ski patrol. It’s a volunteer organization,” Liechty said.

Besides being able to find skis and snowboards, there are also many other necessities for the slopes that can be found at the swap. Boots, poles, bindings, ski clothing, gloves and goggles are some of the other items that are for sale. Beaver Mountain will also be selling ski passes at the swap.

Emmie Staker, a senior majoring in English, said she has attended the swap before.

“I bought some boots for $15,” Staker said.

The ski swap is important to the ski patrol members because it funds their equipment and first-aid supplies.

“We do all of the first aid. Our main job is to package them up, and get them off the hill,” Liechty said.

The ski patrol members’ jobs also require them to “stabilize the wound, and get them in our first-aid room where we can take care of them, or get them to higher medical service,” Liechty said.

Nicolette Forbush, a junior majoring in English and physical education, attended the ski swap for the first time last year.

“I loved it because there’s so many different products,” Forbush said.

Forbush said she was able to purchase a snowboard and some bindings for “a really good deal.”

Beaver Mountain is also offering students the chance to hit the slopes at a discounted price. Their unlimited daytime season pass is being offered to students for $249, but these must be purchased at the Beaver Mountain ski office. Single day passes can be purchased for $28.

People who would like to participate can drop off any equipment they would like to sell starting Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Stan Laub Training Center, located at 1400 N. 1000 East in Logan. The swap runs Thursday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. All major credit cards will be accepted.
