LETTER: A on mountain a novel idea

Dear Editor,

I am writing concerning the “A” being place on the mountain. A fair article was written in Wednesday’s paper. Both sides of the issue were addressed. However, I do not find substantial evidence to not put the “A” back on the mountain. By merely stating we would be placing it “back” on the mountain is argument alone.

As supporting evidence, look at Logan High School. They are currently sharing the space with us, and to my knowledge, they light up their “L” on special occasions. If there has been no issue raised with them doing just that, what then is the big deal with the university doing so?

Another doubt that originally crossed my mind is the financial problem of providing for the “A.” If it were a problem we were addressing this financial issue before others of more pressing circumstances, I would hesitate. But as Steve Palmer stated in Wednesday’s article, there is a prominent member of the community who is willing to do so.

The argument we already have an “A” on Old Main is another valid one. It is unique and eye-catching, a wonderful edifice. In rebuttal, the lighted “A” on the mountain would hardly be taking away from it. In fact, it would compliment it in many ways.

I personally feel the aesthetic beauty in Logan is good reason many students and members of the community choose to come here. With the proposed plan of a lighted “A,” we support just that claim. We will be making a statement by not plowing a spot to cement a large letter on the hill. Perhaps others will follow suit and care for the environment like we have done.

The proposed plan is not to light up the “A” every night like the one on Old Main, but to make it a novelty event to promote our unity and other characteristics which make this university such a desirous place for so many. My compliments to Steve, for spear-heading such a novel idea and to Kevin Nielson for heading this worthy cause.
