LETTER: Center singles out differences

Dear Editor, I agree entirely with the letter from Eric Chandler regarding the unwise use of university funds for a center for gays and lesbians, and would add the following observation: Such a center only serves to single out the gay and lesbian lifestyle as different – an aberration somehow in need of special support. This is in direct contradiction with what practitioners would have others believe – that the gay and lesbian lifestyle is completely normal. Given this contradiction, one might ask why gays and lesbians would support the center. I can only presume the perceived benefits (an official, university-financed meeting place, visibility and opportunities for active or passive recruitment) outweigh the fact the lifestyle is now treated as even more aberrant. Should the university be in the business of financing such benefits to any group or club defined solely by their sexual activities?
