Internet server down to due car accident Internet providers’ dial-up connections went down all over Northern Utah Wednesday morning about 7 a.m. when a car accident between Salt Lake City and Ogden severed a fiber optics line. The line provides mainly Internet connections to northern Utah and about 70 percent of all Internet in that area was affected, said Jeff Limb, employee at PC’s Unlimited in Logan. “This is very rare and the last [time the connection] went down [was] about five years ago,” Limb said. More than 2,500 calls were handled by PC’s Unlimited before the line was back up around 1 p.m. Limb said complaints made about the Internet being down ranged from lost stocks to product order delays.

Fresh Folk returns to Utah Public Radio Absent from Utah Public Radio’s weekend lineup for four years, the locally originated “Fresh Folk” has returned. The hour-long program is heard Saturday nights at 8 p.m. Blair Larsen, a board member of the Bridgerland Folk Music Society, a group involved in staging monthly shows, will return as host. “Fresh Folk” is a part of Utah Public Radio’s Saturday lineup which includes “E-Town” from 5 to 6 p.m., “Prairie Home Companion” from 6 to 8 p.m., “Fresh Folk” from 8 to 9 p.m., “River City Folk” from 9 to 10 p.m., “Celtic Connections” from 10 to 11 p.m. and “Women In Music” from 11 to midnight. Utah Public Radio is heard in Logan on KUSU 89.5 and 91.5 FM.

Journalists meet, discuss ideas Friday The Society of Professional Journalists will be holding a meeting Friday at 3:30 p.m. on the first floor of the Animal Science Building. All communications majors as well as non-majors are encouraged to attend.Never-ending book sale being offered The university libraries at Utah State University now offers a “continuous book sale.” The new service replaces the long-standing annual book sale traditionally held during National Library Week. Sale books are located on a book cart in the Merrill Library lobby and are rotated weekly. Patrons can look at the books on the cart and pay for them at the circulation desk. All book sale proceeds are used to purchase new library materials. Sale books are generally duplicate copies of collection materials or items that have been withdrawn from circulation.Students to compete in Tax Challenge Utah State University is one of 10 teams that won the right to compete at the national Andersen Tax Challenge in St. Charles, Ill., on Nov. 16 through 18. The regional contests, held Oct. 19 through 20 at eight universities across the country, brought together 99 teams from 78 universities to test their tax knowledge and win scholarship prizes. USU is a finalist on both a graduate and undergraduate level. National finalists from each division receive a scholarship award for their school’s designated scholarship fund. First place teams receive $20,000; second place teams, $10,000; third place, $5,000; and the remaining national competition participating teams, $1,500. Andersen also awards the top 10 non-qualifying teams in each division with a $500 Regional Honorable Mention scholarship. Some of the 2001 undergraduate regional honorable mention recipients are: Boise State University, Georgia State University, Marquette University, Miami University (of Ohio), Oklahoma State University, Southern Utah University, the University of Connecticut.
