Ultimate frisbee ekes by BYU

In a rematch between in-state rivals on Saturday, the Utah State University men’s ultimate Frisbee club defeated BYU 17-15 in Provo.

The two teams previously met on Oct. 20 in the Big Sky Warm-up hosted by the Aggies. In that game, the Aggies came away with a 13-10 victory.

“We beat them at our tournament and they definitely wanted a rematch,” USU team captain Dustin Smith said.

Smith said there is a rivalry between the two teams and the Aggies were happy to beat the Cougars again.

“It is a big rivalry,” Smith said. “Not many local teams are that competitive. They [BYU] are probably our biggest local rivals and everybody likes to beat BYU in any sport.”

In Saturday’s match, the Aggies were in control the whole way. Smith said the Aggies were up 7-3 and again 14-9 late in the game. Although BYU did come back to tie the game at 14-14, Utah State pulled out the victory.

“They kept coming back but we stuck it out,” Smith said.

Currently, the Aggies are in the preseason and had only played in two tournaments before Saturday’s exhibition game.

“We played very well,” Smith said. “A lot of the new guys stepped up big.

“We had some awesome team play,” he said. “The team looks better than at the same time last year.”

Utah State was scheduled to play another tournament in Tucson, Ariz., on Nov. 17, but it was canceled. Instead, the team will try to schedule another exhibition game against BYU and Idaho State University in December, Smith said.

“Our team looks very promising,” he said. “Our goal is to make it to nationals this year.”
