USU to host annual Academic Olympiad A high school team from Moscow, in the former Soviet Union, will join the 24 Utah and Idaho teams competing at this year’s 18th annual Academic Olympiad Wednesday in the Eccles Conference Center. Students will be arriving at 7:45 a.m. and taking individual written tests in four subjects. There will be a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. in the Taggart Student Center Ballroom. The students will participate in a Star Wars competition, a college-bowl style tournament at 1 p.m. in the Sunburst Lounge. Winning teams will receive awards including medals, trophies and other recognition. Some students will be awarded USU scholarships. Journalists to elect officers at meeting The Utah State University journalism and communication department is trying to start a chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and will be holding a meeting Friday in the Animal Science Building, Room 106 at 3:30 p.m. The journalists are hoping to elect officers at this meeting and are currently taking nominations.

City Council to discuss re-zoning The Logan City Municipal Council Meeting will be held at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, located at 255 N. Main St. The council will be discussing re-zoning approximately two acres on the block of 300 West and 300 South. They will also discuss making 1000 West into a truck route.

Search for science dean is underway A search for a dean for the College of Science is now underway. Students and staff are encouraged to be involved in the nomination campaign for the position. Anyone can participate by sending names and contact information to Noelle Cockett, chair of the screening and search committee. She can be contacted by e-mail at fanoelle@cc.usu.edu or at 797-0979. Cockett will then send a letter of invitation to apply along with the position announcement to the nominee. It will not be necessary to obtain approval from an individual before nominating him or her, as the nomination is merely an invitation to reply.

Pi Kappa Alpha to host date auction Pi Kappa Alpha and other organizations will be helping raise money for the Cache County American Red Cross by holding a date auction for charity. The dates will include dinner with a movie. The auction will be Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Taggart Student Center Sunburst Lounge. Men and women from sororities, fraternities and ASUSU will be auctioned to the highest bidder.

Free Software forum to be held

Bruce Perens, a senior strategist, Linux and Open Source Hewlett Packard Corporation, will be speaking at a free software and Linux forum entitled, “A world of Freedom.” The forum will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Eccles Conference Center. Admission is free.
