The Utah State University men’s basketball team improved their record to 3-0 Wednesday in the Spectrum as they defeated the Idaho State University Bengals 64-59.

Junior forward Desmond Penigar started the game with a lot of fire, proving why he was named the Big West Athlete. Penigar scored six points in the first four minutes of the game.

Coming from a basketball family, Penigar’s mother played for Chaffey City College and his uncle played for Louisiana State University.

A heavily decorated high school athlete, Penigar was a two-time all-league and all-county selection at Upland High School in California.

Following graduation, he attended Ventura Junior College for two years, leading his team to the third round of the state playoffs as a sophomore. Penigar was also the two-time runner up for California Player of the Year, the second leading scorer and rebounder for California and was a two-time first-team all-conference and all-state selection.

After signing with the Aggies, Penigar went to work scoring 67 percent from the field and 100 percent from the free-throw line in the game against the University of Utah. He scored 20 points against the Bengals.

“We have trust in each other,” Penigar said. “When somebody goes out, we know that somebody has our back and they’ve got to be there for us.”

Penigar has his priorities in order regarding the upcoming game with BYU.

“We’ve got this game out of the way and we can focus on BYU now,” he said.

Penigar is a junior majoring in criminal justice with a minor in child development.
