Engineering students prepare rocket lift Utah State University engineering students John Jacklin, Matthew Dushku, Rex Burgon and Adam Dissel prepared a hydraulic lift for a 45-foot-long rocket launch rail. The events of Sept. 11 dashed the group’s plans of launching its Unity IV rocket from Dugway Proving Grounds this past fall. But the students, who teamed with University of Utah and BYU students to construct the 20-foot 350-pound reusable rocket, decided to build their own portable launch rail and have secured permission to launch their vehicle from less sensitive federal sites. The inaugural launch is tentatively set for Jan. 26 from Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats.
President meets Chinese businessmen President Kermit L. Hall met with vice general manager Jiashan Meng and chief engineer Chongshan Fan of Hanjian Group Company, Ltd., a Beijing, China-based construction and manufacturing corporation listed among the top 50 corporations in China. They discussed student exchange and having faculty share their expertise with the company as well as potential scholarship at Utah State University for Chinese students. Dawson Fan and Angela Liu, graduates of USU served as interpreters. The visitors were also interested in establishing an education link similar to USU’s existing degree programs in Hong Kong and China in which Chinese teachers are trained to teach USU curriculum and then send exams and papers to the USU professor for grading. China’s acceptance into the World Trade Organization and the need to understand and use Western business techniques provided much of the impetus for the Fans’ visit.
