LETTER: Wal-Mart decision saddens soldier

Editor,

I am ashamed of our little town. From what it looks like, the Logan City Planning Commission went ahead and approved a new Wal-Mart in the face of hundreds of protests, spitting on them and basically telling them their opinions meant nil. When did this happen, when did we stop listening to what our citizens want and started listening to what our tax coffers want? The same thing is happening nationwide, and I held hope for the Cache Valley that here at least we would have a decent, honest conversation about this.

I am currently deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom so it is hard for me to keep up with the news, but this is the kind of news I don’t want to see. There will come a time when our leaders who supposedly represent us will no longer be able to do things without a serious public reckoning. When considering how low voter turnout is, they should understand that such a large gathering of people protesting something truly represents a much larger portion of the population than first meets the eye. I challenge our elected officials to look into their hearts and ask themselves, did we really do the right thing? My personal opinions regarding the mega-corporation notwithstanding, this kind of political bullying must not be allowed.
