USU’s Lloyd named BWC best track freshman

USU’S LLOYD NAMED BIG WEST’S BEST TRACK FRESHMAN

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State thrower Zack Lloyd was named the male Big West Freshman Athlete of the Year it was announced on Wednesday. The award was voted on by the league’s head coaches.

Lloyd, who is from Ely, Nev., anchored the Utah State throwers in his first season with the program. He earned a pair of second place finishes at the conference meet, posting a season-best mark of 176-07 in the discus and 62-02.25 in the shot put.

Lloyd came up less than eight inches short of taking the title from Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Year Russ Winger of Idaho, who had a mark of 62-10.00. Lloyd’s top mark in the shot put this season – and the second-best effort among conference throwers – was a 62-06.00 toss at the Weber State Wildcat Twilight Invitational on May 5.

Twice this year Lloyd earned conference athlete of the week honors

Cal State Northridge’s Julie Eze was named the female freshman athlete of the year. She ran the 100 and 400 hurdles events as well as on both relay teams at the conference championships.
