Aggie lacrosse team loses to Cougars
The Utah State University men’s lacrosse team lost to No. 3 BYU Saturday 15-1 in Logan.
The loss leaves the Aggies (1-10) almost relieved that the season has come to an end.
“I don’t want to say we’re relieved it is over, but it has been a long season because of how short-handed we were,” said head coach Evan Nitchman
The Aggies were playing with a 16-man roster compared to their opponents’ rosters of 20 or more players. Many times the short roster would limit the chance for the players to substitute and leave the Aggies short on energy at the end of the games, Nitchman said.
USU did play BYU tough for the first half, limiting the high scoring Cougars to 2 points in the second period and trailing 1-7 at half-time.
A big reason for close first half was the play of goalie Dan Gasser who recorded 29 saves for the game.
But BYU blew the game wide open in the second half capitalizing on Aggies’ miscues.
Nitchman said the Aggies will recruit hard locally and in Salt Lake to build up their roster.
Lacrosse is a new sport to Cache Valley high schools. It was established four years ago at Sky View and Mountain Crest high schools and the following year at Logan and Box Elder.
John Atwood, a former Aggie lacrosse player, was a big part of the lacrosse coming to the local high schools and is currently coaching at Sky View High School.
