LETTER: ASUSU should not dictate

Editor,  In response to Brandon Halford’s proposed bill, ECB 05-15- Capital and Support Reporting, I spent part of A-day talking with various club leaders about the situation. Twelve out of 13 clubs I asked signed my petition to urge ASUSU to vote this bill down. The clubs involved are the Salsa Club, Operation Smile, Japanese Club, Paintball Club, S.T.I.C.K.S., Alpha Epsilon Delta, College Democrats, ECOS, United Campus Volunteers, College Republicans, Interfaith Service Club and Amnesty International. Even the former ASUSU organizations and traditions vice president of 2003-04 signed it. I hope this sends a strong message to ASUSU that the students do not approve of the bill. We do not find it appropriate to make the process even more difficult and cumbersome for students to get help from ASUSU and then threaten possible legal action if they determine funds are misused.

We recognize and support the need for increased accountability amongst dispersed funds. We’d like to see processes in place that help clubs in genuine need and encourage honest spending. We ask that we be involved in the creation of the process. We ask that ASUSU vote this bill down and create an ad hoc committee consisting of club leaders and ASUSU members. Last week ASUSU rejected the proposal to freeze their own accounts at inauguration, a way to stop frivolous end-of-the-year spending. They decided to make an ad hoc committee to find a “solution” to their problem. We ask for the same kind of consideration and that they involve us in the process of finding a solution, not dictate to us bad policy. Scott Dewey
