Homecoming dance cancelled
The ASUSU Programming Board has decided to eliminate the Homecoming dance this year, due to decreasing numbers in recent years and scheduling conflicts with the inauguration of President Stan Albrecht.
A five-year Homecoming report showed the numbers of students attending the dance have been decreasing rapidly, leading to the board’s decision to eliminate the event this year, said Maren Barnett, ASUSU traditions chairwoman. Also, Barnett said, this year is different because they are trying to work around the inauguration schedule of Albrecht.
“We sat down and evaluated our students and our target and decided that the students at Utah State today wanted something different,” Barnett said. “Why not do something new for today?”
And so they did. The committee decided to replace the dance with a pre-game party Friday night, which will include a disc jockey, live music, activities and competitions, Barnett said.
For those students who would rather have a dance, Barnett said to get excited for the spring formal.
“We had to look at the overall students, and for the overall students, the dance just wasn’t working. The spring formal should provide something fun for those who are upset,” Barnett said. “We are preparing for a huge spring formal.”
Barnett said the Homecoming activities have changed this year. In past years, Homecoming started on Monday and ended with the game. This year, Homecoming will start the Thursday before the game and finish with the inauguration of Albrecht.
According to Barnett, activities will begin with street painting on Thursday, a barbecue on Friday at 7 p.m. on the TSC Patio and then a party from 9 p.m. to midnight. True Aggie night will be held the same night, where Albrecht and his wife Joyce will be sharing the first kiss.
The 5K run will begin Saturday morning followed by the parade at 10 a.m. and the game at 1 p.m., Barnett said. Instead of the usual after-game party, a movie will be playing in Romney Stadium directly following the game.
On Monday, ice cream will be served on the TSC Patio. Tuesday is Alpha Chi dollar days and Mr. USU is scheduled for Wednesday night, Barnett said.
