ASUSU shouldn’t change tradition

Editor,

I am writing in reference to the activity scheduled for tonight. I saw that ASUSU had scheduled a “True Aggie Night” for tonight and was a little confused since this tradition is carried on by the Student Alumni Association Aggie Pride committee and not by ASUSU. I was also intrigued as to how one can become a “True Aggie” tonight as tradition holds that one can only become a True Aggie when kissed by one on the full moon or at Homecoming and A-day. It appears that some Aggies among us have been misinformed and so I would like to take this opportunity to set the record straight about what it means to be a True Aggie. The “A” was built in 1916 by a group of young men known as the Be-No’s. Its purpose was to serve as the site of an initiation ritual when a young man had to kiss a young lady atop the “A” under a full moon at midnight. It spread across campus and became known as the method by which one could attain True Aggiehood. With this in mind I would like to invite all those interested in becoming a true True Aggies to the first official True Aggie Night scheduled for September 17 at the “A.” This will be your first opportunity to earn the prestigious True Aggie title, complete with official True Aggie card which the Alumni House will laminate for you at no cost. I must confess my disappointment with ASUSU with their false belief that they have the right and power to change such a long-running tradition, and by so doing they invite all those who attend tonight’s activity to become counterfeit True Aggies.

I hope in the future ASUSU and all the organizations on campus will be able to coordinate schedules and activities better, and that we can all support one another by recognizing and respecting the niches filled by each individual organization on campus. By doing this we can make USU even better.
