OUR VIEW: Wal-mart coming, residents still right thing to do
Despite community outcry, it looks like another Wal-Mart will be moving into Logan.
But the valiant efforts of the many people present during Thursday’s protest in front of Logan City Hall were not fruitless. The well-controlled and well-organized protest voiced the opinion of many Logan residents that Wal-Mart is overstepping its bounds.
Regardless of plans to move construction of the new super-sized store forward, the protest proved how much the people of Logan really do value their community.
Although the current Wal-Mart, located on 1550 N. Main Street, is well used and very popular, it doesn’t qualify nor justify the intrusion of a second of the huge commercial enterprises to overtake another corner in Logan. Many, even those who do not have personal grudges against the corporation, would simply appreciate more variety in shopping choices.
In a growing community with threads of local pride still running strong, it’s hard to watch smaller businesses struggle, or never come to Logan at all, because of the big yellow smiley face.
The fact that Wal-Mart is still coming despite wide-spread community disapproval Wal-Mart is. With its hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue each year, it continues to build more and more stores – many in cities like Logan that fight its coming.
So Wal-Mart will come, and despite all our shouting, will probably still have plenty of business. The impact on the valley, for better or worse, remains to be seen.
But one thing’s for sure – very few people will be cheering at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
