Food. Football. And fun.
For Tiffany Evans, director of student involvement, it doesn’t get much better than that.
Thursday night at 6 p.m. as part of WOW Week, Utah State football coach Brent Guy will be on campus – at the Taggert Student Center Patio – to host an Aggie radio talk show.
Students can tune in at KVNU 610 AM and listen to the show.
“I think it is an outstanding idea,” Evans said. “It has potential and is a real opportunity as the football program enters a new era to get students involved and excited.”
Each week, Guy and a couple football players will be at different sites on campus, talking to students and answering questions about the football game.
From the TSC Patio to sorority and fraternity houses and the Student Living Center, Evans said Guy will be all over campus talking to students.
“We decided to go with locations that have a built-in base of students and is also very accessible to the student body,” she said.
Director of Athletic Media Relations Mike Strauss said having an Aggie radio show is something he has been trying to get since he came to Utah State in 1996.
“It’s something we did at Oklahoma State,” Strauss said. “Both Coach Guy and I were there. It’s a great way to get the students involved in the football program and raise interest.”
Strauss said when Guy came to USU, he really wanted to do a radio show. He said Guy really wanted to get to know the students and wanted the students to know the coach and the team.
Fazoli’s is hosting the radio show and will be there – with food – Thursday night.
“I expect a great crowd,” Evans said. “They can come and get all-you-can-eat spaghetti for $2. And they can talk to the coach. I mean, come on – it’s great.”
Evans said she hopes the radio show will become something that sticks around for a while.
“What I hope is for a new tradition,” she said. “Something that becomes an integral part to the institution.”
Strauss and Evans both said they hope the students will get involved and get excited about the program.
“We hope there’s some energy,” Strauss said. “That students ask the questions that they want to ask. It’s not just Al Lewis, the host, asking questions.
“We look forward to before the show, after the show and during breaks when there can be some conversation so they get to know him better. Guy is a very personable person and people are going to enjoy talking to him.”
Along with Guy, two Aggie football players will be at the TSC patio Thursday night. USU’s safety Andre Bala will be on the show was well as offensive guard Ryan DeQuillettes.
Students will be able to ask questions and talk to both the players and Guy for the 45-minute radio show.
Evans said she hopes the students can come to the radio show and just learn about what is going on with the team.
But more than anything, she said she just wants the students to come and get involved.
“Let’s show what the Aggie spirit is all about,” she said.
