The Utah State Aggies Hockey team exploded into their regular season with two wins this past week.

The Aggies opened the season on Thursday against Colorado State University in a close game Utah State saw through to a 3-1 victory.

Friday night they defeated a weaker BYU squad 10-4.

Both games were played on the Aggies’ temporary home arena at the Ogden Ice Sheet.

The first score of the Colorado State game found the back of the net after just five minutes of play by Ian Tracy. Aaron Burrell picked up the assist.

The second period found Deryk Anderson slapping in a puck to make it 2-0 with assists coming from Rad Anderson and Nate Pierce.

Colorado State was held scoreless by Adam Lain until early in the third period when the Rams knocked in a shot on the rebound of a Lain save.

Eight minutes later, Rad Anderson doused any fire the Rams might have had with a breakaway goal.

The Rams were trying to make a line change and were a little too anxious to get off the court. The game ended three to one.

The bad news after the game was the injury report.

Two of the team grinders, Clint Stosich and Greg Sneed, sustained serious injuries with a pulled ligament and separated shoulder, respectively.

The good news was the Aggies picked up a big win against a top ranked team.

Friday night every Aggie had the opportunity to play in the game against BYU.

The Aggies scored eight goals in the first two periods and then let up a little knocking only two in the third period making the score 10-4.

“The real key difference isn’t effort but belief,” assistant coach Nate Anderson said.

With belief, the team has picked up less penalties and two wins.

Following its successful weekend, the Aggies will prepare for a road trip to Spokane, Wash.
