Utah State Finishes Fourth In Big West Commissioner’s Cup

For the third straight year, Utah State finished fourth in the annual Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings. The standings are based on a school’s finish in each sport and the point value varies based on the number of institutions competing for a championship. UC Santa Barbara won the Cup for the second straight year with an average of 126.3 points per event. Long Beach State was second at 120.0, while Pacific, which won the first two cups in 1999 and 2000, finished third at 112.5. Utah State finished with 111.8 points, while UC Irvine rounded out the top five with 109.4 points. Utah State won league championships in men’s basketball this winter and men’s track this spring to earn 200 points in each sport. This fall, USU earned 160 points for a second-place finish in men’s cross country and 140 points each for fourth-place finishes in women’s cross country and volleyball. USU also scored 50 points by tying for eighth in soccer. Along with receiving 200 points for winning the men’s track championship this spring, USU scored 120 points for a fourth-place finish in women’s track, 90 points with a tie for fifth in women’s tennis, 70 points with a tie for sixth in softball, 40 points with a tie for fifth in men’s tennis, and 20 points for a ninth-place finish in men’s golf. UC Santa Barbara won league titles in women’s basketball, men’s cross country, men’s soccer and men’s tennis, while finishing second in women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving. Long Beach State, the runner-up for the cup, won league titles in women’s volleyball and women’s tennis. Regular season standings are used to determine points in the round-robin sports of soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball. Team finishes at the championship are used for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s track, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s tennis. This past season, Utah State sent its volleyball team to the NCAA Tournament where it advanced to the second round for the second straight year and its basketball team advanced to the National Invitation Tournament. USU’s cross country teams and gymnastics team advanced to NCAA regional action this year, while the Aggies also scored points at the NCAA Indoor Track Championships and will send team members to the Outdoor Track Championships to be held May 29-June 1.
