Dance tickets made available

Tickets are available for the Homecoming dance in the Taggart Student Center ticket office.

Tickets are $20 per couple in advance and $25 at the door. Pictures are included. The dance will be held Oct. 18 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the TSC.

The theme for this year’s Homecoming week is “Living the Aggie Tradition.” There will be a wide variety of music with various announcers and live bands during the dance.

Local author to be honored

The Mountain West Center for Regional Studies and Chapter Two Books will host a reception to honor a local author Oct. 12 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Chapter Two Books, 130 N. 100 East in Logan.

Alison Comish Thorne is the author of “Leave the Dishes in the Sink: Adventures of an Activist in Conservation Utah,” which was recently published by the Utah State University Press.

In her book, Thorne provides the reader with a small-town Utah perspective on the social movements of the latter part of the Twentieth Century. She interweaves her involvement in the fight for women’s rights, educational reform and other progressive causes with the details of her life as a wife and mother in a conservative social environment.

Conferences held for single moms

The first mini conference for the Bringing Hope to Single Moms Foundation will be held Oct. 12 at 10 a.m. at the Utah State University Brigham City Campus, located at 265 W. 1100 South in Brigham City.

Bringing Hope to Single Moms is a non-profit foundation that empowers single mothers through education, access to resources and long-term mentoring.

The mini conferences cover issues important to single mothers and will include topics as diverse as car maintenance, credit reports and divorce. They are free, and all single mothers are invited to attend. The conferences are also held in Salt Lake City the third Saturday of each month.

English dept. to host conference

The Professional and Technical Communication Program in the department of English at Utah State University is hosting the 29th annual conference of the Council for Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication Oct. 3-5 in the Eccles Conference Center.

Faculty and program directors from professional and technical writing programs across the country will be in attendance. Participants are from secondary, community college and university levels.

The conference theme is “Complicating Binaries: Exploring Tensions in Technical and Scientific Communication.”

Mark Zachry, English department assistant professor, will intiate discussion in the plenary session, which will showcase new graduate programs in technical and professional

communication.

Suicide seminar to be held Oct. 2

A free suicide awareness and prevention seminar will be held for everyone in the community Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Mount Logan Middle School.

Rotating workshops will include mood disorders, substance abuse, eating disorders and bullying. There will be a separate workshop just for youth.
