Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice
Home décor, crafts, furniture and, of course, everything nice, can be found at Sugar ‘n Spice, a craft boutique in Hyde Park.
The store is made up of booths displaying various items for sale. Alex Nokes, a sales associate at the store, said half of the booths have been rented by local vendors to sell their homemade crafts. The other half is retail.
“It’s more than a craft store. It’s also home décor and most everything is finished crafts,” Nokes, a junior in family, consumer and human development, said.
“[The owners] saw some craft stores in town, but only ones that had really expensive or really cheap, unfinished crafts. They wanted something in between,” Nokes said.
The booths are set up to give patrons a look at some ideas for their homes or apartments. Each booth has something different to offer, allowing all tastes in décor to enjoy the atmosphere, Nokes said.
One problem many college students face is bare walls in an apartment. Buying decorations can be costly and many students don’t have the space to store seasonal decorations.
Kellie Tie, a sales associate in the store, said they have small things college students can buy for decorating.
“It’s hard when you’re a college student to buy decorations – then you have to lug them along every time you move,” she said.
Nokes said even college students can find things they can afford at the store.
“There are seasonal things for Christmas or holidays that can help students decorate their apartments and make it feel like home,” she said. “It’s affordable for a college budget.”
Trisha Buck, a senior in business management, said she loves the store.
“They have a good variety,” Buck said, “It sparked my inspiration. It gave me great ideas to spice up my bland college apartment.”
“We have a large seasonal selection, but then we also have the staples like furniture, wreaths, candles, picture frames and mirrors,” Nokes said.
They have a large selection of Salt City brand candles as well.
Tie, a junior in dietetics, said Sugar ‘n Spice is a great place to get wedding gifts. There are personalized gifts as well, like vinyl signs that can be special ordered with the couple’s name on it, she said.
“It’s also a good place for guys to get presents for their girlfriend or gifts for your mom,” Tie said.
She said the vinyl signs are very popular and come ready-made with various imprints. One even quotes Professor Dumbledore from Harry Potter, she said.
