Duhadway sets pole vault record

Kathryn Duhadway set a new school record for the women’s pole vault with a height of 3.97 meters (13-00.25) Saturday at the Wilson Motor Track and Field Invitational at the Fieldhouse Saturday.

Her height was also the highest any woman has ever vaulted in the Fieldhouse.

“It was a good day,” she said. “I knew I’d break the Fieldhouse record, but I didn’t think I’d get 13 feet.”

Kaylene Gastaldi also set a new personal best in the pole vault Saturday.

Duhadway said she and Gastaldi feed off each other.

“She’s the greatest training partner,” Duhadway said. “We’re really supportive of each other.”

Dahadway and Gastaldi finished tied Jan. 14 in Pocatello at 12-feet 4-inches. It was a personal best for both of them at the time.

Sprinter Yance Fawcett said the home meet sets the tone for the team for the entire year.

“That’s what this meet is for,” he said. “It’s a small meet with the home crowd. It’s a low-key atmosphere.”

Fawcett said many of the runners were resting and did not compete Saturday.

“The distance guys don’t run until conference,” he said. “They need to rest their legs after cross-country season.”

He said D.J. Smith was also resting after a strong performance in Pocatello.

Aggie thrower Kevin Liu had two personal best throws and won the weight throw with a toss of 18.13 meters (59-05.75) and claimed second in the shot put with a throw of 15.04 meters (49-04.25).

Vanessa Hawkins won the women’s 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:04.75 while Vance Twitchell won the men’s 3,000 with a time of 8:46.18.

Aggie Clinton Silcock won the high jump with a jump of 2.07 meters with Mike McConkie finishing third with a height of 1.97 meters.

The USU men’s 4×400 relay also took first with a time of 3:23.47.

Fawcett said it is a little different running on the indoor track than the outdoor.

“There are no weather conditions,” he said. “The size of the track is different. It’s harder on your body because the curves are tighter.”

He said the team cannot wait to get outside again.

“Everyone likes outdoor because of the sun and spring,” Fawcett said. “That’s why they did track.”

The track team will compete at Washington State next weekend.
