’80s cover band the cure for canceled party

As a replacement for the university-wide party in the Merrill Library Friday, ASUSU is sponsoring “Rock Out with the Gods,” an ’80s party in the Fieldhouse.

Laurel Evans, programming vice president, announced the change Tuesday during the ASUSU Executive Council’s regular meeting.

The party will feature an ’80s cover band, Metal Gods, based out of Los Angeles, and students are invited to dress up for the event.

“I’m really excited about the dressing up,” Evans said. “It’ll be fun.”

It will begin at 9:30 p.m. after the men’s basketball game.

Originally, the party was to be held in the Merrill Library, but did not meet fire-code guidelines.

In other items, the council approved supporting candidates running for ASUSU positions for the 2006-’07 academic school year under certain stipulations. Current ASUSU members cannot use their offices on the third floor of the TSC to help individual campaigns or represent or support a candidate as an ASUSU officer.

“With us having a year of experience, hopefully we’ll have some kind of idea about people running for our office,” said Josh Wood, diversity vice president.

The council unanimously supported this year’s policy and agreed on using their best judgment during the entire election period.

“We’ll have to accept any consequences for breaking the rules and act accordingly,” said Maure Smith, graduate studies vice president.

Cody Bingham, Agriculture senator, encouraged council members to attend the university’s Faculty Senate meeting Feb. 6 where they will be discussing the approval of a fall break beginning fall semester.

Faculty Senate tabled the legislation during its last meeting in January because they did not have enough information. However, ASUSU’s senators will be sending an e-mail to each Faculty Senate member informing them of all the details concerning the legislation for fall break, Bingham said.

In addition they will be encouraging students to attend the meeting as well.
