Utah Intercollegiate Applications due

Applications for the Utah Intercollegiate Assembly are due Sept. 27 and can be picked up in the Taggart Student Center Room 326.

A committe will be selected and headed by Jeremy Kidd to research student and state-wide issues to be presented at a legislative session in Salt Lake City. All Utah State University students are invited to apply.

UIA meets annually during spring semester with various other universities thoughout the state including BYU and Westminster College to perform mock legislation.

Students from each university present five bills in a legislative session at the State Capitol building.

“This is a great opportunity for students to get involved and learn about the legislative process and make changes within higher education,” said Mike Waggoner, Associated Students of Utah State University executive vice president.

The top five bills are selected and presented to the Utah Student Association which are then put before the Board of Regents to be passed.

Students urged to register to vote

In light of elections, students are urged to register to vote throughout Civic Awareness Week Sept. 23-27.

Tables will be set up by the Taggart Student Center, the Business building and Old Main throughout the week for students to register.

“This [Civic Awareness Week] is a great opportunity for students to not only register to vote, but also become informed about the elections and make their vote count,” said Mike Waggoner, Associated Students of Utah State University executive vice president.

Voting for state representatives in District 4 and the first congressional district will be Nov. 5.

Civic Awareness week will include Lt. Gov. Olene S. Walker, various candidates and MTV’s “Rock the Vote.”

‘Posters on the Hill’ taking submissions

Submissions for the annual “Posters on the Hill” are being accepted and can be submitted online at www.usu.edu/vpr.

State Posters on the Hill is a celebration of undergraduate research held in the Rotunda of the tate capitol. Organized by Utah State University, it features the two public research universities’ students and their research projects.

Students of all disciplines from around the state share the results of their investigations with legislators.

This demonstrates the value of undergraduate research through the words and stories of the student participants themselves.

Student wins national scholarship

Utah State University student Ross Hunsaker was awared a scholarship from the Air and Waste Management Association’s 2002/2003 Scholarship Program.

Hunsaker, a graduate student pursuing a degree in environmental engineering, took the fifth place scholarship for his research that is leading him to a career in air pollution control.

USU petroglyph workshop coming

The department of English at Utah State University will host the annual Petroglyph Up the Canyon Writers Workshop Oct. 3-6. It will feature authors Mary Clearman Blew and Ralph Black.

Workshop events will take place on the USU campus and at the USU Forestry Station where participants will take advantage of bunkhouse lodging with meals provided. To register for the workshop, call USU conference services at 1-800-538-2663.
