Save USU Football, please!

I am writing in response to the sad story of Roger Robinson leaving the USU football team. For those who don’t know, he was the highest rushing running back this year. He showed alot of heart in his years here at USU, and never was given a chance to play to his potential. I don’t know the whole story, but the athletic administration is so tight lipped that we’ll probably never hear the truth. I find it ironic that I was the one who wrote the letter to the editor the first week of school about supporting our athletic teams. I still support most of the sports, but football has become hard to support. Many regular students could probably care less that Robinson left the team. But, most of them come to the games for social reasons, certainly not for the sorry excuse for a football team. But, Roger Robinson quitting the team is a symptom of a much bigger problem within the program. Now, I don’t want to call for Dennehy’s head, which I did before Arslanian was fired, but there are many problems in this program. I don’t see why Dennehy was given a contract extension, when he hasn’t proved that he is even better than our last coach, who was shown the door pretty quickly. I find it ironic that this forum has been used to debate the firing of the band director. Well, what about the football coach, his position is much more visible and higher paying, so he should be held to the usual standard of winning games. I know we are the laughing stock of the football World, but if Dennehy were shown the door, I wonder who we could even get to come to a program in such disarray. Now, we may get in a conference soon, and Dennehy might be given a chance to resurrect the program in a conference with a bowl game to play for as a goal. Part of the problem has been that the team nothing to play for, no higher goal of winning a championship or getting in a bowl. I mean, the BYU game is probably our bowl game, and I really do hope we win that. But, something has got to change. If either Dennehy or his staff needs to be changed, then so be it. Again, SOMETHING HAS GOT TO CHANGE! SAVE USU FOOTBALL! Adam Holt
