Tennis team drops home match
In their first home match of the season, the USU women’s tennis team lost 4-3 in a hard-fought battle against Weber State this past Thursday at the Sports Academy.
The Aggies began the afternoon on a negative note, losing all three doubles matches. Then, despite winning the first three singles matches, USU was unable to finish Weber off, losing the final three.
“Great match, we just came up a little bit short,” said Coach Christian Wright. “I was real proud of the girls; they competed on every point. It was just one of those days where it didn’t go our way.”
Though the Aggie’s loss drops them to 3-6 on the year, sophomore Courtney Anderson improved her singles record to 7-2 with her win over Weber’s Inalise Pienaar, 6-2, 6-3.
The Aggie’s other two wins came from their top two seniors. At the No. 1 spot, Lindsey Bennion defeated WSU’s Elena Smit, 6-4, 0-6, 7-5.
At the No. 2 spot, Jill Smith defeated WSU’s Alexandra Ilie, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6.
In the rest of the singles action, freshman Dee Dee Nelson lost at the No. 4 spot to Weber’s Karla Petorious, 6-1, 7-5.
At the No. 5 spot, senior Andrea Barker lost her match to Weber’s Ashley Schapper, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
At the No. 6 spot, junior Lauren Monson lost her match to Weber’s Gabriela Venditto, 6-3, 6-1.
The women’s team, along with the men’s team, will next play at home against Mesa State Friday in a match that was originally scheduled for today.
The men will start play at 2 p.m. with the women set to begin at 5 p.m. Students are encouraged to come support the Aggies in their new facility at the Sports Academy.
Matches are free of charge to students and the public.
