Letter to the Editor: Professor of ‘cultural differences’ lacked respect in letter

Editor,

This letter is in regards to the English Professor who recently wrote in concerning the reactions against the Persian Peacock Ad. As an English Professor, you teach a class on Literature and Cultural Differences – as the name suggests, you teach your students about various cultures and your classes have an underlying message of accepting and understanding differences.

Your letter to the editor shows your contempt towards the culture found in Utah and the beliefs that are prevalent in this society. You of all people, a Professor of Cultural Studies, should understand that culture and religion are sacred to people. You chose to come to Utah and to this culture, and while I do not expect you to convert to the LDS church or its standards, you should respect the beliefs of others – especially as a teacher at this university. You are attacking ninety percent of your students with the comments you made in your letter to the editor. Without showing respect for your students, how can you expect them to respect you and take you seriously as a professor?
