Lack of school spirit

In my Wednesday morning class, I overheard two students talking rather loudly about the front page story about the missing Betty Blue costume. Both girls are athletes on the USU track team. The conversation went something like this, “Betty Blue?! What a stupid ___ name! Who is she?” “I don’t know-wait it’s the school mascot’s girlfriend” “That’s so gay! What’s the name of our mascot?” “Blue” “What? That’s so lame ___ !”Okay, now I know that we all can have our opinions, but I listen to this crap all the time. I hear all sorts of complaints: the Mormons, Utah weather, Utah driving, Utah slang/accents, etc. Maybe there’s a utopia out there for these people where no one ever cuts off another driver, the people use perfect grammar without slang, no one eats jell-o and a majority religious group doesn’t exist. In the mean time, it disgusts me that there athletes representing my school that apparently don’t like being here, don’t like the average in-state student and didn’t even know what our school mascot is.
