Banquet seeks to bring Asia to life
The Eastern world is filled with billions of people speaking dozens of languages.
It’s time to taste the Orient.
This Saturday, the Asian American Student Council is offering students a taste of Asian culture.
“The biggest reason ‘Tip Toe into Asia’ is put on is to share the Asian culture with the campus community,” said Sam Curley, the Native American coordinator for Multicultural Student Services.
“We are celebrating the cultures of Asia and want others to celebrate with us,” said Lisa Tran, president of the AASC and junior in biology.
The second annual ‘Tip Toe into Asia’ Banquet will include a selection of foods from several different Asian countries, Tran said.
In addition to the Asian cuisine, the festivities will include a fashion show, singing and a traditional Chinese dragon dance performed by a group from Salt Lake City.
“We are so excited this year because [of the] dragon dance. This banquet is the culmination of the efforts of everyone involved in the council. We want people to have a better understanding of our culture by getting a taste of it,” Tran said.
Tickets are required to attend the event and can be purchased in the TSC Ticket Office for $12 each.
Members of the AASC will be selling Asian merchandise in the International Lounge and the first floor of the TSC to raise money for the council on Friday, Curley said.
“When people think of Asia, they see China and Japan. We are offering them a broader view of all of the countries on the continent,” Tran said. “When people see and experience these things, they are able to understand better.”
The AASC is open to all students and is a part of Multicultural Student Services.
“We aren’t like the Chinese student group. They focus more on the international side. Most of us in this club were born in America and have parents or grandparents who have come to the United States,” Tran said. “We’re just experiencing that culture for ourselves.”
