Rock wins honor
Basketball player Bernard Rock was voted USU’s athlete of the week by the local media panel, it was announced today.
Rock, a senior from New York, N.Y., led Utah State to two conference victories over Pacific and Idaho last week. Against Pacific, the 5-foot-10 guard recorded 15 points on 6 of 11 shooting.
Rock was also credited with five rebounds, two assists, and three steals in the game. Against Idaho, Rock scored a team-high 21 points making 7 of 8 shots including four three-pointers. Rock grabbed two rebounds and three steals in the win.
OTHER ATHLETE-OF-THE-WEEK NOMINEES: GYMNASTICS: TINA ELLIS/ Sophomore… won the all-around with a career-high 39.225 performance in the Aggies 194.075-193.600 win over Boise State last week. Ellis won both the balance beam and bas competitions with scores of 9.850 and 9.925 respectively. She also finished third on the floor exercise with a career-high 9.850 score. MEN’S TENNIS: ANDY MADERSBACHER/ Senior… fell to Simmo Sommar of Idaho State Jan. 25 before defeating Utah’s Nicolas Yipp Jan. 27. Madersbacher was the only Aggie to post a singles win against Utah. USU lost to both Idaho State and Utah. WOMEN’S TENNIS: TRACY BERTAGNA/ Junior… defeated both Colorado State’s Bobbe Vasos and Idaho State’s Lauren Dial in two matches with identical 6-0, 6-0 wins. Utah State defeated Idaho State 4-3 and lost to Colorado State 4-3. MEN’S TRACK: JAMES PARKER/ Senior… came in first place in the shot put and the weight throw at the Wilson Motor Invitational Jan. 26 with throws of 17.9 meters and 20.9 meters, respectively. Parker again had first place finishes in the shot put (17.75 meters) and weight throw (20.46 meters) at the Idaho State meet on Jan. 27 . WOMEN’S TRACK: CANDICE WORKMAN/ Freshman… finished in first place in the shot put at both the Wilson Motor Invitational (13.99 meters) and the Idaho State meet (14.26 meters) last week.
