Letter to the Editor:

Editor,

It is my belief that usu suffers from a lack of diversity. Sadly, the most diverse unit on campus is our athletic department. It is very difficult to recruit and retain faculty of color, lgbt faculty, and women – both because of the diversity problem in cache valley generally and some pretty archaic policies where childcare is concerned. With very few faculty of color, i’m not sure how we expect to recruit undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.

But the college republicans’ position on this issue is hurting matters even worse. By spinning affirmative action–an attempt to increase diversity on campus – as reverse discrimination, they are demonstrating a lack of sensitivity and awareness to the histories of these still oppressed and under-represented people. What’s worse, they ask members of these groups to “out” themselves and to vocalize how they have benefited from this oppression. All for $100.

I implore the statesman to stop printing reverse discrimination propaganda and for the college republicans to cease their continuing attack on affirmative action on this campus. It’s xenophobic, sexist, racist, homophobic, and just plain sophomoric.
