Bookstore’s ‘Sizzling Singles’ raises scholarship money
The USU Bookstore decided to celebrate being single by hosting the Sizzling Singles Scholarship Drive, which began Feb. 9, said Celestyn Hollingshead, USU Bookstore marketing specialist.
“For Valentine’s Day, we were sick of everyone talking about love. We wanted to celebrate singles and have it go to a good cause,” Hollingshead said.
Each of the singles represents a scholarship fund from a college or department, but the single doesn’t benefit monetarily from drive, Hollingshead said.
Participants are willing to be involved in order to raise money for the scholarships.
Hollingshead said the selection of the participants was based partially on this willingness.
“We just picked people who were willing to put themselves out there, who weren’t afraid to be goofy for a good cause,” she said.
The singles and the scholarship they each represent are: Coy Whittier, senior in public relations, representing the Agricultural Dean’s Leadership Scholarship; Jon Parrish, senior in speech communications, representing the Thomas Berghoff Mechanical Engineering Scholarship; Lee Cannon, senior in public relations, representing the Student’s Scholarship for the College of HASS; Russell, senior in marketing and economics, representing the Huntsman School of Business Scholarship; Alexa Cordner, junior, representing the Women’s Center Scholarship; Amy Jensen, senior in public relations, representing the Beryl and Tura Springer Scholarship in Geology; Crystal Degen, senior in public relations, representing the Jessica Clark Tayon Memorial Scholarship in Natural Resources; and Hali Hesley, freshman in physical therapy, representing the Education College Scholarship for Diversity.
Within the group of contestants there are competitions to see who can raise the most money, Hollingshead said.
“The boys each want to win and are getting competitive with one another. Some of them don’t want to win necessarily but want to beat one specific person,” Hollingshead said.
Steve Russell, one of the participants, jokingly said he is going to beat the other boys in the drive.
“I’m better looking than Coy, more athletic than Jon and smarter than Lee,” Russell said.
Hollingshead said all students can benefit from donating and participating in this cause.
“There’s a scholarship for each college, so if you are part of a college – which you are – you could win a scholarship,” Hollingshead said.
The bookstore is urging people to continue to donate any amount to their favorite college or the college of their favorite single.
“If everyone brought in $1, that would be $1,500. Bring in the change hiding in your couch cushions,” she said.
The drive has been extended to next Friday. To learn more about the singles and scholarships visit the USU Bookstore or become a fan of the bookstore on Facebook.
