Duhadway jumps for USU athletic honor

Editor’s note: Duhadway was named athlete of the week for the week of Jan. 16-20 after breaking the school record in the pole vault.

Utah Statesman: What do you like to do in your spare time?

Kathryn Duhadway: Anything outside. Mountain biking, skiing, backpacking, hiking.

US: What is your favorite thing about Utah State?

KD: The location. I love the mountains and the snow.

US: How did you get involved in pole vaulting?

KD: I started way back in seventh grade. My brother did it before me and I always wanted to do it … he didn’t do it a lot, but enough to get me hooked.

US: What is the hardest thing you have ever done?

KD: I don’t know. I did a quadrathalon in Jackson Hole. [It involved] a downhill, slalom, and cross country ski, road bike and kayak.

US: Why did you attend USU?

KD: It honestly was an accident. I had other plans. But it’s worked out great and I’m glad here.

US: What are your plans for the future?

KD: Well, I graduate this summer. I want to get a job and I’d like to get into coaching.

US: Is there a future in pole vaulting beyond college?

KD: There is a small group of people who compete post-collegiately. I’m planning on trying to take that avenue.

US: What is your favorite memory?

KD: Clearing 13 feet on Saturday.

US: What is it like to have your name on a school record?

KD: Very exciting. It’s fun to see how far I’ve come and what I’ve had the opportunity to do.

US: Have you ever had any major injuries?

KD: No. My body is very healthy and I’m very grateful for that.

US: Who is your role model?

KD: Joel Johnson. That’s my coach and I’m very impressed with what he’s done with himself.
