Women’s tennis defeats ISU
POCATELLO, Idaho – Tracy Bertagna’s impressive 6-0, 6-0 victory at number four singles and Johanna Johnson’s win at number five singles in the final match of the afternoon led Utah State to a 4-3 women’s tennis victory at Idaho State on Tuesday.
The Aggies are now 1-0 on the season, while Idaho State fell to 0-1.
Idaho State claimed the doubles point with victories in two of the three doubles matches. ISU also won the number one and number two singles matches, but USU’s depth overmatched the Bengals in the end.
Jocee Mason won at number three, Bertagna won at number four,
Johnson won at number five and Amelia Martinez won at number six
singles to give the Aggies the victory.
Mason, a freshman from Bountiful, Utah and Johnson, a sophomore from Spanish Fork, Utah, both went three sets in their victories. USU’s number one singles player, Sarah Lowe lost her match in a hard-fought battle, losing 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.
Johnson’s match with Hayli Scott decided the outcome of the match. Johnson won the first set 6-3 before losing 5-7 in the second set. Johnson then overpowered Scott in the final set with a convincing 6-0 win.
Utah State will return to action when the Aggies host Colorado State at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 1:30 p.m. The match is free to the public.
