Fresno State sweeps Aggie softball team
After waiting almost two months for a home game, the Aggies were forced to wait a little longer.
Games scheduled to be played in Logan against Harvard were canceled due to wet weather last week, but Utah State finally had enough dry time to take the field against 24th-ranked Fresno State in their first home games of the season and first WAC games ever. The Aggies had about as much luck at home as they have had on the road, losing to the Bulldogs 3-2 and 10-2 in a doubleheader.
In the opener, the Aggies (4-21, 0-2) opened the game with a single homerun by Jamie Fife in the bottom of the first inning and held the Bulldogs (24-13, 3-1) scoreless until the fifth inning, when Fresno State took a 2-1 lead. Sara Fleming hit a homerun for the Aggies in the sixth inning to tie the game, but Haley Perkins knocked a homerun of her own for the Bulldogs in the seventh inning for the final score.
“We just haven’t been able to finish a game,” Fife said.
The Aggies then faltered again, falling 10-2 to the Bulldogs. Fresno State opened the game with a five-run first inning and closed it with five runs in the seventh. Utah State managed just two hits to Fresno’s 12.
“Each game has been a stepping stone for us, so that’s going to be building us up, hopefully to help us get through this conference,” Fife said. “I think that every game that we have been playing we’ve been getting better. Sooner or later, we’re going to come together and we’re going to start winning a lot of games. I can see that in our future.”
Utah State will hit the road again this week to face Brigham Young University in Provo Tuesday in a doubleheader.
Their next home game will be a doubleheader against the Cougars April 18.
“I think we’re going to do really well,” Fife said. “BYU’s always an in-state rival that we have and I think it’s always good for us to play teams like that because our intensity is so high.”
