Letter to the Editor: City of Hyrum has a two-dog limit

Editor,

Think twice before moving to Hyrum City if you have more than two dogs. In January of 2005, I received a ticket for having two too many dogs. I went to apply for a kennel license and found out that kennel licenses were only available for those select few that live in an area zoned as agricultural. (Silly me, with all the buffalo, cows, etc. living in a huge pasture behind my backyard I assumed I did live in an agricultural zone). Even though it was suggested that I register two dogs at another address, I wanted to be a law abiding citizen.

To make a long story short, I submitted all the paperwork, followed all the correct procedures, got signatures from everyone on my block and attended every city council meeting from January until October. The subject was “tabled” in October. My emails inquiring about the status of the situation have not been answered.  A phone call to Hyrum City revealed what I already knew – the subject has been tabled. Now I have been summoned by the City of Hyrum to appear before the judge in a pre-trial concerning the whole issue.

If only I had cats. I could have as many as I want without the fear of getting visits from animal control (or is that canine control in Hyrum?). Oh, and for the record, my dogs live in the house with us and are part of the family. I can’t just “get rid of” two of them as Hyrum City expects.
