Summer activities give students reason to stick around Logan
Need a little excitement? Put down the Slim Jim and stay in Logan for the summer. It has activities for everyone and a lot of them are free.
Debbie Harvey, program information representative for Logan Parks and Recreation, has a list of activities for “young to old,” she said.
The committee has been preparing them for a few months now, Harvey said. With a handful of fliers, Harvey shares ideas for students and residents of Logan.
Demolition Derby
On May 8, at the Cache Valley Fairgrounds, the Demolition Derby starts at 7 pm. The derby will also be held July 10 and September 17. Besides the cars crashing into each other there will be entertainment.
Cassie Simper, a junior majoring in family human development, said the derbies are fun.
Dates, friends and family are good reasons to attend the derbies, she said.
“You get to cheer on wrecks,” Simper said. “They have a dance contest in the mud and they always have a band.”
Summer Fest
Summer Fest Art Fair and Music Festival is a tradition in Logan. The activities start from June 17 and finishes June 19. The flier states a free
admission and bands like Voice Male and Mambo Jumbo will perform.
Other entertainment isn’t announced yet. On June 5, at Willow Park, Logan Parks and Recreation will be looking for more talent holding a Quest for the Best for Summerfest. Local bands can audition to perform to win prizes and the opportunity to play at Summerfest 2004. More information is found at

Harvey said many bands always ask if they can perform for Summer Fest, and this is their way to let locals try to perform on the stage. The competition is a public event starting in the morning and ending in the evening.
Pioneer Day Celebration
The Bar M Wranglers will perform on July 24, and there are many activities provided at Willow Park. King and Queen Volleyball, three-on-three basketball and a
skateboarding competition will be held that day, the flier states.
Music, food and games will continue all through the day and finishes into the night.
Simper said the fireworks are always a good activity.
“I like the country show down,” she said. “All the local country singers try to get to Nashville because the winner moves on.
Fireworks
What would summer be without fireworks? Utah State University’s Romney Stadium will have its traditional fireworks show on July 2, featuring beach music.
“[I] never see the fireworks in the stadium,” Simper said. “We sit on grass and enjoy the fireworks there.”
For those who see the fireworks in the stadium they will be entertained by Papa Doo Run Run’s Beach Party.
Other Activities
Tournaments are held for tennis, basketball and Frisbee. Logan Parks and Recreation is also having a Luau with a DJ.
