Letter to the Editor: Vegan’s points were misleading
Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to the article titled Animal Liberation team promotes Veganism. I feel that some of Moss-Holmes points were incorrect and misleading. I felt that this point was presented very incorrectly, that Meat, dairy and eggs are making us sick.
Moss-Holmes said “Meat, dairy and eggs are making us sick.” I don’t see how those are making us sick when there are clear facts about all the protein, vitamins, and minerals are located in animal products.
Meat is nutrient-dense and is among the most valuable sources of important vitamins and minerals required in a healthy balanced diet. Red meats are abundant sources of iron, a necessary mineral to help carry oxygen to body cells. Also found in meat is a rich source of zinc and essential trace element that contributes to tissue development, growth, and wound healing. Red meats contain a rich supply of the B vitamins. Vitamin B12 occurs only in animal products, such as meat, fish, poultry, and is essential for the protection of nerve cells and the formation of blood cells in bone marrow.
Calcium and phosphorous, both important in bone growth and other body functions naturally occur in milk. Approximately 75% of the calcium in the American diet is supplied by dairy products. Vitamins A, B (complex), D and E are found abundantly in milk.
I want to know where you expect to find the minerals and nutrients that are available in red meats, dairy, and eggs. I feel that all of these things are vital for a healthy well balanced diet.
